Fond\u00e9e en 1229 par la reine B\u00e9reng\u00e8re de Navarre, veuve de Richard Coeur de Lion, ce monast\u00e8re cistercien a travers\u00e9 huit si\u00e8cles d&rsquo;histoire. Aujourd&rsquo;hui restaur\u00e9e et ouverte au public, l&rsquo;abbaye offre une parenth\u00e8se de s\u00e9r\u00e9nit\u00e9 et de beaut\u00e9 \u00e0 quarante minutes de La Fl\u00e8che.<\/p><h2>Une fondation royale<\/h2><p>B\u00e9reng\u00e8re de Navarre, \u00e9pouse du c\u00e9l\u00e8bre Richard Coeur de Lion, choisit de fonder cette abbaye pour y \u00e9tablir sa s\u00e9pulture. Apr\u00e8s une vie mouvement\u00e9e &#8211; couronnement \u00e0 Chypre, croisade en Terre Sainte, captivit\u00e9 de son \u00e9poux &#8211; la reine trouve refuge dans le Maine o\u00f9 elle finit ses jours. Son gisant, sculpture de marbre blanc d&rsquo;une grande finesse, repose toujours dans l&rsquo;abbatiale.<\/p><p>L&rsquo;abbaye est confi\u00e9e aux moines cisterciens, ordre r\u00e9put\u00e9 pour l&rsquo;aust\u00e9rit\u00e9 de sa r\u00e8gle et la puret\u00e9 de son architecture. Fid\u00e8les aux principes de saint Bernard, les b\u00e2tisseurs ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 un ensemble o\u00f9 la lumi\u00e8re, les proportions et le d\u00e9pouillement invitent au recueillement.<\/p><h2>L&rsquo;architecture cistercienne<\/h2><p>L&rsquo;Abbaye de l&rsquo;\u00c9pau illustre parfaitement les canons de l&rsquo;architecture cistercienne. L&rsquo;\u00e9glise abbatiale, d&rsquo;une grande sobri\u00e9t\u00e9, impressionne par ses volumes et sa luminosit\u00e9. La salle capitulaire, o\u00f9 les moines se r\u00e9unissaient chaque matin, conserve ses vo\u00fbtes d&rsquo;ogives et ses colonnes \u00e9l\u00e9gantes.<\/p><p>Le scriptorium, o\u00f9 les religieux copiaient les manuscrits, t\u00e9moigne de l&rsquo;activit\u00e9 intellectuelle du monast\u00e8re. Le dortoir des moines, vaste salle sous charpente, \u00e9voque la vie communautaire r\u00e9gl\u00e9e par la pri\u00e8re et le travail.<\/p><h2>Le parc et les jardins<\/h2><p>Le domaine de 13 hectares qui entoure l&rsquo;abbaye invite \u00e0 la promenade. Les jardins ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9am\u00e9nag\u00e9s selon l&rsquo;esprit cistercien : simplicit\u00e9, utilit\u00e9 et beaut\u00e9. Un verger conservatoire pr\u00e9serve des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s fruiti\u00e8res anciennes, tandis qu&rsquo;un jardin de simples rappelle l&rsquo;importance des plantes m\u00e9dicinales dans la vie monastique.<\/p><p>Les grands arbres du parc, les prairies fleuries au printemps et l&rsquo;\u00e9tang o\u00f9 se refl\u00e8te l&rsquo;abbatiale composent un paysage d&rsquo;une grande s\u00e9r\u00e9nit\u00e9. Des bancs diss\u00e9min\u00e9s permettent de s&rsquo;attarder et de profiter du calme des lieux.<\/p><h2>Visites et \u00e9v\u00e9nements culturels<\/h2><p>L&rsquo;abbaye propose des visites libres ou guid\u00e9es tout au long de l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e. Les guides font revivre huit si\u00e8cles d&rsquo;histoire, des origines royales aux vicissitudes de la R\u00e9volution, en passant par les restaurations successives.
